Update on former Kmart building

October 24, 2023

The City’s investigation into Friday’s fire at the former Kmart building at 10 W. Lake St. is now complete, and plans are moving forward for the structure’s demolition. The final origin and cause of the fire are undetermined.

With the assistance of the Public Works Department, members of the Minneapolis Fire Department, MFD’s investigative team and cadaver dogs from Minnesota Task Force Urban Rescue Team searched the collapsed area of the building yesterday to ensure there were no victims of this fire. Infrared technology was also used to look for any signs of victims. No victims were detected.

The Department of Community Planning and Economic Development, working with MFD, Public Works, and Finance and Property Services departments, is in the process of determining the demolition and clearance plans for the remaining structure. These plans will become clearer in the coming days, including the start date of that work.

The New Nicollet Redevelopment Project remains on track and staff are currently gathering feedback from community members on new roadway and public space design concepts. Learn more about the project on the City’s website.
