City seeking input on roadway, public space design concepts for New Nicollet Project

October 4, 2023

The City of Minneapolis is seeking input from community members on new roadway and public space design concepts for the New Nicollet Redevelopment Project.

The City is reconnecting Nicollet Avenue between Lake Street and the Midtown Greenway as part of the New Nicollet Redevelopment Project. The project represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to help reshape the future of the site and contribute to an increased quality of life for people living and working in the immediate area.

The City plans to construct Nicollet Avenue between Lake Street and Cecil Newman Lane and develop the remaining site into a high-density, mixed-use, walkable area. The City plans to demolish the former Kmart building in March of 2024. Construction on the road and bridge over the Midtown Greenway is anticipated to begin in 2025.

Based on community input, City policies and project goals, the project team has created preliminary design concepts for the New Nicollet roadway and potential public space(s) on the site. Community feedback will help shape the final concept, which will be brought to the Minneapolis City Council and Mayor for approval in early 2024.

There are several ways to be involved. Your voice matters.

  • Take a new survey on preliminary design concepts for the New Nicollet roadway and potential public space(s) on the site. The survey is available in English, Spanish, and Somali on the project web page. The survey will close 4 p.m. Nov. 14.
  • Attend an outdoor open house 4:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10 at the parking lot of the former Kmart on Lake Street. It will be a fun and family-friendly event. Come eat free tacos and share your thoughts on what the new street and potential public space(s) should look like. The event can be accessed from entrances on Blaisdell Avenue and First Avenue. (In the case of inclement weather, the outdoor open house will be rescheduled to the following day.)
